Building Your Identity

“Improvements are only temporary until they become part of who you are.

– The goal is not to read a book, the goal is to become a reader.
– The goal is not to run a marathon, the goal is to become a runner.
– The goal is not to learn an instrument, the goal is to become a musician.

This year, focus on the identity you want to build.”

James Clear, Atomic Habits

So, for me …

The goal is not to study the Norwegian language. The goal is to be fluent in Norwegian.

The goal is not to study front end web development. The goal is to be a front end web developer.

The goal is not to teach web design. The goal is to become a web design teacher.

The goal is not to walk every day. The goal is to become a walker.

The goal is not to practice martial arts. The goal is to be a martial artist.

The goal is not to post videos on YouTube. The goal is to be be a YouTuber.

I guess I am working towards being a Front-End web developer and web design teacher, YouTuber, and walking martial artist, who is fluent in Norwegian.

Let’s narrow that down:

I am becoming a Norwegian speaking web developer, online teacher, and outdoor martial artist.

Just do one thing each day to move me in that direction.

(Two things if you want to be super ambitious.)
